David Bohm is misschien wel één van de meest ondergewaardeerde wetenschappelijke denkers van onze tijd. Hoewel hij sterk werd beïnvloed door wetenschappers als Albert Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer en Niels Bohr, werd hij ook geïnspireerd door mystiek. In de jaren zeventig en tachtig kwam hij in contact met religieuze leiders als Jiddu Krishnamurti en de Dalai Lama die zijn werk mede hebben gevormd. Zowel in de wetenschap als in de filosofie was Bohm’s voornaamste zoektocht het begrijpen van de aard van de werkelijkheid in het algemeen en van het bewustzijn in het bijzonder.
Afgelopen maand werd ik door Raymond Witvoet gewezen op de documentaire “Infinite Potential: The Life and Ideas of David Bohm” uit 2020. Een documentaire over de man die Einstein zijn “spirituele zoon” noemde en de Dalai Lama zijn “wetenschapsgoeroe”. De documentaire is een absolute aanrader, ook als je nog helemaal niets begrijpt van kwantumfysica.
De documentaire gaat in essentie over de zoektocht van David Bohm naar een nieuwe orde in de fysica. De zoektocht naar de relatie tussen de relativiteits theorie en de kwantum-fyisica, tussen seen en unseen, tussen materie (deeltjes) en medium (verbindingen), tussen het grootste (macro) en het kleinste (micro) in onze kosmos. Een zoektocht die Bohm mede heeft beschreven in het boek ‘Wholeness and the Implicate Order‘ (1980).
De Duitse fysicus Jan Walleczek, één van de geinterviewden voor de documentaire, weet de essentie het best te omschrijven in zijn bijdrage ‘Why Bohmian Theory Matters‘:
“Quantum mechanics is really about explaining the properties of the microscopic world, the materials our bodies are made of, our brains are made of at the very microscopic level.
General relativity, or relativity theory in general, is about explaining the largest cosmic dimensions—space-time, gravity, the whole macroscopic order of the cosmos.
And so you can imagine that this macroscopic cosmic level needs to be connected to this super subatomic quantum level. How can this be done? And the two theories describing these two realms really can’t do that and there have not been compatible with each other since their inception, and since quantum mechanics was developed there was a tension between the two.
I think this is the reason why David Bohm’s theory is coming up again. Because it’s the only, was the first theory to have an underlying ontology making a claim about the sub-quantum reality. And I think this is why people are drawn increasingly to this. But at this specific level, the Bohmian theory made a clear prediction about the nonlocality of the world.
What is nonlocality? Nonlocality is really, to put it in simple words, the profound discovery of the interconnectedness of the universe.
What is the ability for human beings to act in the world? And observation is one aspect of it, but it sounds very passive. Right? We are just observing what’s already going on. But science is doing more and human beings are doing way more than that. We are actually interacting with the world.
We’re changing the world to our needs. Then you end up with the biggest picture of a completely unified, universal perspective that also integrates the observer with the observed. And it overcomes the illusion of separation between observer and observed. And you are recognizing that it’s all one act of observing.”
Ik ga de documentaire zeker nog vaker bekijken, er zit nog zoveel meer in dan dat ik nu heb kunnen verwerken. De kern voor mij is hoe David Bohm ons laat zien hoe je kunt omgaan met onzekerheid en complexiteit. Het zorgvuldig en verfijnd aftasten van wat werkelijkheid is in een context van continu bewustzijn van weten dat je niet weet zoals Janine Schimmelpenninck dat zo mooi verwoord in een reactie op LinkedIn.

Volgens de filosoof Constantin Karmanov is de mens onstoffelijk. HIJ is non lokaal verbonden met het voertuig lichaam. Verder is er nog een tweede bewoner die ons om maar wat te noemen instaat stelt onze hand te bewegen.
